1. Dissolution

After entering the soil, urea dissolves rapidly in soil moisture, initiating the conversion of nitrogen into plant‑available forms.

2. Hydrolysis and Ammonification

Soil microorganisms convert urea into ammonium carbonate through ammonification. This stage temporarily incorporates part of the nitrogen into microbial biomass, supporting microbial metabolic activity.

3. Nitrification

As microorganisms complete their life cycle, the ammonium released from their biomass undergoes nitrification, producing nitrate anions (NO₃⁻), the form most readily absorbed by plants.
